Server selection

A dedicated server checklist beyond CPU and RAM

Compare access, recovery, storage and support before selecting a dedicated server.

Linux & server operations
The useful takeawayThe specification sheet is only the beginning of the operating agreement.

Describe the workload before the machine

Write down the applications, storage needs and expected operating pattern. A server for a small content archive differs from one running a busy database or periodic processing jobs. Include the people who will maintain it and their availability.

Separate required capacity from nice-to-have capacity. A larger machine does not remove the need for backups, monitoring or an upgrade procedure. Identify which resources are difficult to change later and which can be adjusted with limited disruption.

Ask how you recover lost access

Confirm the available recovery console or rescue process, the authentication it requires and the support route when normal access fails. Ask what happens if the operating system cannot boot. Keep the answers in a runbook accessible outside that server.

Storage also needs a recovery story. Distinguish disk redundancy from an independent backup and test the restoration process. Know who notices a disk failure, who replaces hardware and what data the customer remains responsible for protecting.

Turn support language into concrete scenarios

Ask how a hardware fault is reported, what evidence support needs and which response expectations apply to your plan. Confirm the location and network details that matter to your workload. Avoid translating a broad availability statement into a recovery guarantee.

Keep a comparison table with the same questions for every candidate. Before moving production, validate access, install a representative workload and rehearse recovery on test data. A clear boundary between provider and administrator responsibilities is part of the product you are choosing.

Koddos includes DDoS-protected dedicated servers in its hosting range, combining a dedicated-server offering with network protection. The next step is to match the chosen configuration to the workload and clarify recovery access, backup ownership and the support route.

Before you finish

  • Workload documented
  • Recovery access verified
  • Backup responsibility explicit
  • Support scenarios discussed
